Why does hoarding pose a risk?

Hoarding is defined as when there is excessive clutter that impairs basic living activities such as mobility, housekeeping, showering, or sleeping.

Fire hazards, disease from unsanitary conditions, vermin and insect infestations, and also the risk of injury from tripping over possessions can be caused by even the smallest type of hoarding. Over time, as more and more items in the home accumulate, the more hazardous the situation becomes.

The process of cleaning the premises of hoarding and clutter removal can be difficult challenging work because people with hoarding behavior often find it difficult to part with their possessions. When family members or friends are attempting to “change” the behavior of a hoarder, it can result in friction that may last for years to come. 

Removing hoarding contents should be considered a hazardous project because the potential for mold and decay that may be lurking under the layers of stuff can create multiple types of health conditions that may result if not wearing personal protection gear in a hoarded environment.
